Wasabi: Restaurant review

Noosa Sound, QLD

Visiting Wasabi - which is cantilevered over the Noosa River - is almost like entering the mythical Japanese floating world of Ukiyo. The restaurant has bragging rights to one of the most idyllic locations on the Sunshine Coast and one of the state's most striking rooms, too. The menu is underpinned by the region's finest produce, including rare Japanese ingredients raised by the owners at Honeysuckle Hill Farm. Tasting menus offer feather-light tempura zucchini blossoms with sake-poached bugs and Mooloolaba prawn, accompanied by nori salt and a richly savoury coral custard, or perhaps braised lamb gyoza, packed with spring onion, bamboo shoots and shiitake, served with ponzu dipping sauce and broth-like dumpling tea. Affable waitstaff steer diners through a worldly drinks offer boasting stellar sake and whisky selections. Chocolate sorbet with tart cherries and chocolate-praline tuiles ensures a suitably pleasurable conclusion.
