Sydney cocktail bar Maybe Sammy has scooped the Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award as part of The World’s 50 Best Bars 2020.
The gong is given to one bar that The World’s 50 Best Bars Academy – a 540-member panel of industry experts – voted as their single best hospitality experience from January 2019 to March 2020.
Co-owner Stefano Catino said he was “humbled” by the award.
“For Maybe Sammy, hospitality isn’t just a word – it’s what we take pleasure in providing to every person who enters the bar, and we are so lucky to have a team who love interacting with people,” he said in a statement.
“This has been a challenging year for the bar industry, but our focus has remained on taking care of our guests and delivering them an experience that delights and exceeds expectations.”
Maybe Sammy, located in The Rocks, takes inspiration from Hollywood’s golden age in the 1950s. In practice, this translates to bar staff decked out in matching double-breasted pink jackets, guests sprayed with bubbles on arrival, and cocktails delivered with smooth service and a… magic touch.
The latest award adds to the venue’s growing list of accolades. Last year, Maybe Sammy clinched a number 43 ranking on The World’s 50 Best Bars list, making it the only Australian bar to crack the top 50 that year.
This is the second Art of Hospitality Award to be bestowed by the international panel. Singapore bar Manhattan was the first recipient in 2019 as part of the Asia’s Best 50 Bars awards.
The World’s 50 Best Bars list is owned and organised by William Reed Business Media, a UK-based business media organisation. The company is also responsible for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.
The World’s 50 Best Bars list for 2020 is set to be announced online on 5 November, 3pm UK time (6 November, 1am, AEDT).
