A1 Canteen’s muffuletta is heading to Melbourne

Dishes from Clayton Wells’ Sydney restaurant will be available for one morning only next week at Belles Hot Chicken in Fitzroy. And it’s first in, best dressed. Get your skates on.

Could the muffuletta be Australia’s most Instagrammed dish of 2018? Layers of sliced salami, ham and mortadella are alternated with cheese, olives, artichokes and a touch of salad in the hearty New Orleans sandwich that’s become something of a signature at A1 Canteen, Clayton Wells’ casual all-day diner that opened in Sydney earlier this year. Aside from being downright tasty, all those layers make for one highly photogenic sandwich. And now, it’s coming to Melbourne.

Wells and his sous chef Scott Eddington will team up with Morgan McGlone of Belles Hot Chicken to offer a short, sharp breakfast menu next Tuesday morning, bringing the greatest hits of A1 to Melbourne’s hungry masses. The fried egg and mortadella roll, curried scrambled eggs, eggplant, romesco and provolone sandwich and, of course, the muffuletta will be offered alongside Bloody Marys, Five Senses batch brew and a breakfast juice.

“I’ve always wanted to do something with Clayton,” says McGlone. “And Scotty who runs A1 Canteen is our old chef at Belles so I’m really excited to be joining forces with him and my mate, Clay.”

Only 60 portions of each dish will be available, so the tip is to arrive early and order up.
