Once the exclusive domain of women, Eleanor Roosevelt and actress Veronica Lake among them, the Martha Washington is now open for everyone.
The recently reopened hotel, in Manhattan's NoMad (North of Madison Square Park), is a few minutes away from the Empire State Building and Fifth Avenue. Inside the Renaissance Revival building, architect Annabelle Selldorf retains some of the historic details, such as the lobby's fluted columns.
In the guestrooms, creature comforts take centrestage, with the 265 rooms and suites featuring flat-screens, iPod docking stations, and a dramatic red, black and white palette. Bathrooms feature slate tiles and Davines bath amenities. But the hotel's real draw is Marta, chef Nick Anderer's Roman-style restaurant that churns out thin-crust pizze. Try the salsiccia with mozzarella, pork sausage and cremini mushrooms.
