This is where your natural mineral water comes from

Still or sparkling?

The French term terroir translates to ‘a sense of place’. When a wine exhibits terroir, the taste evokes the unique environment or specific region where it is from.

A sip of a Bordeaux red wine conjures a tannic bouquet of tobacco, anise, and roses. Meanwhile, a pale, light-bodied rosé hailing from Provence is radiant with delicate fruit, crisp florals, and a refined minerality.

Just like wine, every natural mineral water has a distinctive terroir, too.

S.Pellegrino has been exporting high-quality mineral water around the globe since 1899 — and the success of the renowned Italian brand originates in its terroir.

A sparkling sense of place

The quality of mineral water depends on the site of its source, as well as the deep layer of porous rock through which the water flows on its way to the spring. For S.Pellegrino, their site is located in the foothills of the Italian Alps.

Here, mineral water flows from a natural spring in the San Pellegrino Terme area in Val Brembana, a valley in the Lombardy region.

Fresh snow and rain flow from the Dolomite Mountains in north-eastern Italy at 1200-to-1300 metres above sea level. Arriving at the surface after at least 30 years of travelling through rock, the water becomes naturally enriched with 14 minerals, including calcium, sodium and magnesium.

It becomes a sparkling mineral water with the addition of a naturally occurring carbonate from a natural mine, which gives the water that enticing, bubbly perlage we admire in prosecco and Champagne.

Combining its unique Italian terroir with acidic carbon dioxide creates a delicate sparkling water with a slightly bitter finish. This flavour profile ensures S.Pellegrino Sparkling Mineral Water is recognised and enjoyed around the globe.

Food and sparkling mineral water pairings

Just like wine, the right mineral water can intensify or complement a variety of dishes and enhance your dining experience.

S.Pellegrino Sparkling Mineral Water is best paired with rich foods and red meat, as the carbonation and minerals can cut through heavy textures and cleanse the palate. With slight amounts of natural sodium, it can also enhance the taste of lightly salted dishes.

For dessert, serve sparkling mineral water with rich desserts like a dark chocolate délice or salted chocolate layer cake. The mineral content will heighten sweetness and provide a refreshing contrast to the decadent flavours.

For the finest taste, it’s important to serve sparkling mineral water in a suitable glass. Served at a temperature of 8-10°C, the glass should have a narrow rim to control the flow of water and withhold some of the carbonation.

It’s these distinctive traits that make S.Pellegrino Sparkling Mineral Water ideal for pairing with food and cements its popularity with chefs, sommeliers, and home cooks around the world.
