GT photographer John Laurie's The Light of Day exhibit

Tierra Atacama, Chile

Tierra Atacama, Chile

Over the past five years, GT photographer John Laurie has captured the beauty of landscapes across the world, from the foggy shores of the Isle of Skye to the snow-crested peaks of Myoko, Japan and the historic city scape of Bhukara, Uzbekistan. It might be the best job in the world.

Merv, Turkmenistan.

Now, in The Light of Day, his first solo exhibition, Laurie shares his portraits of the cities and sights where he catches the unmistakable tone of each place. The stillness and clarity found in each photo is immersive, evoking a distinct and delicate picture of the people and larger culture out of view.

Of all the places he's visited, Laurie lists Uzbekistan as a standout, describing "the stoic disposition of the Uzbekistan people and the wonderful muted palette of the landscape."

Bhukara, Uzbekistan.

The exhibit launches Thursday December 8 from 6-9pm at JCP Studios in Cremorne, Victoria, where Laurie will be joined by GT writer Kendall Hill to discuss the stories behind the photos.

The Light of Day, JCP Studios, 51-57 Cubitt Street, Cremorne, Vic; open Thursday 8 December-Wednesday 21 December, Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 10am-2pm.
