Dinner Thu-Sat 5.30pm-10pm
It's all about the garlic bread. But it's not like any garlic bread you've seen before: black, sweet and served as a dessert or mid-morning snack, accessorised with a vanilla-scented burnt-butter cream. Gauge might be Instagram-bait, but there's substance beyond the style. The small, chic dining area is hemmed in by the open kitchen and the coffee counter, catering as readily to the fancy-juice crowd as it does more ambitious diners. There's a fresh elegance in ribbons of tea-smoked raw beef entwined with strands of roasted red pepper and dressed with a warmly spiced XO-like sauce, and the silken almond tofu contrasted with crisp shards of fried eggplant and capers. Poached chicken, glazed with ginger, is juicy under its pretty garnish of squash and squash flowers, neatly accented with the tang of finely grated dried scallop. Wine and service are likewise a cut above, zesty and millennial in all the right ways. We like.
