A man walks into a small bar, confident there's never been a better time to drink cocktails in the city of Perth. See (and taste) for yourself at Mechanics Institute (rear 222 William St, Northbridge, 08 9228 4189) before moving onto 399 Bar (399 William St, Northbridge, 0417 388 257) for Martinis, Old Fashioneds and Mojitos to be reckoned with. In Mount Lawley, Clarences (566 Beaufort St, Mount Lawley, 08 9228 9474) does a roaring trade in punchy eats and drinks, as does El Público, the city's go-to for tequila and mescal and other Mexican mischief.

A fun school theme and polished drinks program put the class in The Classroom (356 Charles St, North Perth, 08 9444 7729), while Rockpool Bar & Grill continues to turn in commanding all-round performances. But while mixed drinks are the toast of the town, Perth's finest wine bar is Lalla Rookh Wine Store, an intimate enoteca specialising in unusual vino. Bottoms up.
