Sydney's best dishes 2016

For our 50th anniversary issue in 2016, we scoured Australia asking two questions: What dishes are making waves right now? What flavours will take us into the next half-century? Sydney provided 16 answers.

Summer feta recipes

Whether in a fresh salad or seasonal seafood dish, feta's creamy tang can be used to add interest to a variety of summer dishes.

Mango recipes

Nothing says summer like mangoes. Go beyond the criss-cross cuts - bake a mango-filled meringue loaf with lime mascarpone, start off the day with a sweet coconut quinoa pudding with sticky mango, or toss it through a spicy warm weather Thai salad.

Christmas vegetarian recipes

The versatility of vegetarian dishes means they can be served alongside meat and seafood, or enjoyed simply as they are. With Christmas just around the corner, we’ve put together some of our favourite vegetarian recipes to appease both herbivores and carnivores alike.

Perth's best cheap eats

Pad Thai Café

Pad Thai Café

You think eating in Perth is expensive? The city's flourishing Asian food scene, at least, says otherwise.

House-made ramen keeps Nao (17 Murray St, Perth, 08 9325 2090) popular with noodle junkies, while the various meats at Hong Kong BBQ House (76 Francis St, Northbridge, 08 9228 3968) are the local benchmarks of their type.

On a quest for the best chicken rice? Tak Chee House (1/364 William St, Northbridge, 08 9328 9445) is often mentioned in this feisty debate. Big flavours at tiny neighbourhood prices make Pad Thai Café (17b Wanneroo Rd, Joondanna, 08 9443 4333) worth seeking out.

In the same category is University Asian Restaurant (88 Broadway, Nedlands, 08 9389 1168) and its repertoire of mostly Cantonese goodies.

Victoria Park is another locality that's rich in Asian pickings, its most valuable player among regional Chinese places being MOM Dumpling House (687 Albany Hwy, East Victoria Park, 08 9470 2088), where the flavours  of the north-east rule the roost.
