Our restaurant critics’ picks of the latest and best eats around the country right now: Bistro Ngyuen, Canberra.
Canberra’s Northbourne Avenue doesn’t quite match the bustling craziness of Ho Chi Minh City. But a high-ceilinged space, lanterns, a vintage moped and the drifting scent of cassia bark and star anise lends a touch of authenticity to this recently-opened Vietnamese eatery. The usual suspects – prawn and pork rice-paper rolls, pho and spring rolls – benefit from high-grade produce, including Angus beef. Salads are super-fresh, lively and well balanced, a lemon-cured rare beef tossed with red onion, carrot, crushed peanuts and herbs among them. And for a cheap, quick snack, there’s a good range of banh mi, too.
