There’s something ritualistic about drinking whisky – it’s never just about pouring a drink. It’s about timing, personalisation, and the weight of a fine-cut crystal glass in your hand. But increasingly, whisky is being appreciated for something beyond what’s in the glass. It’s becoming a design object in its own right.
That shift is being led by heritage houses such as The Macallan, which has once again collaborated with influential designer David Carson to reimagine its Timeless Collections – bringing together sherry-seasoned craft, architectural form and a distinctly modern visual identity.

Whisky bottle design
Where once it was the decanter which held design status, today the bottle has become part of the ritual. These days distillers design whisky bottles to be displayed. To be valued not only for what they hold, but for how they look and feel. Details such as age statements, cask composition and provenance remain essential, but they now sit alongside a more considered visual language.

For his reimagining of The Macallan’s Timeless Collections, Carson drew inspiration from the distillery’s Speyside landscape and the architectural flow of the building itself.
“The architectural form of our distillery, bold, organic and unmistakably of its place, served as a central inspiration for David Carson in the creation of The Macallan’s new logo and pattern,” says Kirsteen Campbell, Master Whisky Maker.
Central to the storytelling of the Timeless Collections is its threefold relationship with sherry – spanning origin, seasoning and maturation. Carson translates this into a visual language through the bottle’s distinctive triangular shoulder. Carson uses it as a subtle design cue that reflects the sherry triangle and the journey behind every pour.
Flavour by design
Ever defined by its environment – in Speyside, in the beautifully wild north-east Scottish highlands – The Macallan whisky Timeless Collections showcase that signature lighter, smoother style of a single malt thanks to the pure waters used from the Spey River. What makes these whiskies unique is the crafted flavour notes across both the Sherry Oak and Double Cask expressions in the Collection.
“Sherry Oak Collection has a rich and complex character led by our sherry seasoned European oak casks. It is these exceptional oak casks that transform our robust and fruity new-make spirit into exceptional single malts that boast entirely natural colour. Enjoy notes of succulent dried fruits and sweet spices, with a depth of flavour that intensifies through the range,” says Kirsteen Campbell.
Extending far beyond the shores of the Spey River, each European or exquisite American oak barrel is seasoned with the uniquely sweet, dried fruit and caramel characters and mahogany hues of sherry from Jerez del Fontera.

The new collectible whisky
The Macallan x David Carson collaboration reimagines the rules of collectible whisky. Age still matters, but today’s collector seeks something more layered: the provenance of the cask, the craftsmanship behind the bottle, the story told before a drop is poured. As a result, The Macallan Timeless Collections aren’t just whiskies to savour, but objects to keep and display. Ultimately the ritual begins long before the glass is raised.
