Nestled in the heart of South Australia’s world-renowned wine region, Kingsford The Barossa is a sophisticated retreat for those seeking the perfect balance of relaxation and indulgence. A long, tree-lined driveway leads you to the historic homestead (which many will recognise as Drover’s Run from McLeod’s Daughters), surrounded by a contemporary complex that feels entirely in tune with its rural surroundings. A striking modern extension crafted from steel and glass is softened by the extensive gardens and pastoral views, complete with gently grazing kangaroos.

The rooms

The original homestead offers eight heritage rooms and suites, which lean into the historic charm of the property with features such as cast-iron fireplaces, timber sash windows and clawfoot baths. Those who prefer a more minimalist approach should book one of the four sprawling View suites, where floor-to-ceiling windows frame the verdant surrounds and each room comes with its own private plunge pool. Here, sleek, contemporary design in soft, neutral shades provides a tranquil retreat after a day exploring the dynamic region.

Food & drink

In-house restaurant Orleana serves up panoramic views alongside seasonal plates that make the most of the Barossa’s fertile land, from slow-roasted meats to perfectly cooked seafood, paired with wines from the property’s own cellar and neighbouring vineyards. The attentive service only enhances the experience, with sommeliers eager to guide you through their curated list, which features a mix of Barossa Valley classics and emerging labels. For more casual dining, the alfresco Peppertree Bar puts a wood-fired pizza oven to good use, whilst serving snacks fireside or poolside, depending on the season.

The service

Welcoming and knowledgeable, the team at Kingsford The Barossa offers tailored advice for guests looking to explore the region. Whether arranging a private wine tour or an alfresco bush bath, there’s a sense that everyone wants you to experience the very best that the Barossa Valley has to offer.

Ideal for: Those looking to soak up wine and serenity

Why we love it:

  • The vaulted wine tunnel. Home to a rare museum collection of Penfolds Grange and Henschke’s Hill of Grace. Tastings can be arranged.
  • In-room treatments. There are four spa treatments available which can be booked in advance.
  • The serenity. And pretending you’re a long-lost McLeod’s daughter.
