Its latest refurbishment pays homage to its Art Deco reincarnation as The Alexander Hotel in the 1920s, where the likes of Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald stayed. The design and heritage of the building is respected, with bold, confident design referencing the era.
In subtropical Brisbane, The Calile Hotel is a spectacular urban resort. The architecture is a subdued form of brutalism, embracing cool stone, brick, concrete and natural timber. Interiors are light and bright, with a focus on life outdoors, from open walkways to the heart of the hotel: the 27-metre lap pool where you can swim languid laps and doze off in a cabana until the water calls you again.

Texture is also a feature at The Hotel Britomart, where Cheshire Architects have created each of the 104 rooms to feel as though they are cocoons, with locally sourced furnishings, handmade ceramics and organic cotton bed linen made from recycled materials. Even the cosy in-room slippers are fully compostable.
