Our restaurant critics’ picks of the latest and best eats around the country right now: Grease Monkey, Canberra.
With craft-beer venues aplenty and the aroma of smoked meat drifting down Lonsdale Street, there are ample reasons to think of Braddon as the Brooklyn of the national capital. Now new arrival Grease Monkey has joined the action. Owner Socrates Kochinos waited eight months on the arrival of a custom-made 12-metre pewter bar from across the Williamsburg Bridge. With the bar now firmly in place, and the shutters of the old mechanics’ workshop up, his modern-day grease monkeys have traded oil changes for flipping some damn fine juicy burgers and sending out excellent fried chicken. With Young Henry’s real ale on tap, and Stone and Wood’s Pacific Ale held in a restored wooden ice chest, this is no cookie-cutter venture. There’s little room for health consciousness, meanwhile, with a sweets list featuring the likes of doughy house-made jam doughnuts, ice-cream sandwiches and maple and bacon milkshakes. We’ll see you there.
Grease Monkey, 19 Lonsdale St, Braddon, 11am till late Monday to Friday; 10am till late Saturday and Sunday
