The team that’s been wowing the west with excellent steak and oysters for the past few years at The Station Hotel (59 Napier St, Footscray, 03 9687 2913) now has another outlet at the Wayside Inn (446 City Rd, South Melbourne, 03 9682 9119) where exec chef Sean Donovan oversees a lengthy menu that focuses on red gum-fired steaks and meats from the rôtisserie.

It’s in a good neck of the woods for quality pubs, with nearby O’Connell’s (cnr Coventry & Montague sts, South Melbourne, 03 9699 9600) channelling old-school pub food through a prism of great ingredients and clever cooking, and Lamaro’s (273-279 Cecil St, South Melbourne, 03 9690 3737) dishing up quality comfort food with Asian and European influences.

At the Robert Burns Hotel (376 Smith St, Collingwood, 03 8669 5190), Spain is front and centre on the  menu and wine list, while the Acland Street Cantina at The Prince (2 Acland St, St Kilda, 03 9536 1175) surfs the Mexican wave.
