Emulating the former shipping shed that once occupied its Macquarie Wharf location, cedar-clad MACq 01 is a unique — and uniquely — Tasmanian hotel. From the historic, local characters for which each room is named, to the unbeatable water, city and Mount Wellington views and cabinets full of local curios decorating the lobby, the sense of place is palpable.
The rooms
Most of the 87 rooms and 27 suites at MACq 01 have balconies that further emphasise their spaciousness and sublime waterfront location. Light-filled, chicly furnished and decorated with work from local artists (including individually created bedheads), they also feature roomy bathrooms and minibars stocked with local produce and games like Barrel of Monkeys and pick-up sticks.
Food & drink
MACq 01’s two bars and Old Wharf restaurant are as popular with locals and visitors as they are with guests, so it’s advisable to have reception secure you a booking to avoid disappointment. Not surprisingly, Old Wharf’s all-day menus (including the excellent breakfast) are Tassie-produce focused, and there is an exceptional range of Tasmanian whisky in Evolve Spirits Bar. The Story Bar has scintillating water views and signature cocktails.
The service
Though occasionally lacking in high-end finesse, service is unfailingly friendly and charming.
Ideal for: Romantic getaways and group adventures
Why we love it:
- The location. MACq 01’s central spot grants easy walking-distance access to the city’s highlights.
- The Lounge. The perfect spot to relax with its central open fire and kelp-inspired ceiling sculpture.
- Walking tours. These themed and guided strolls around Hobart are free to guests.
