Much like its hometown, QT Sydney is brash, theatrical and voluptuous. Established in 2012 in the old Gowings Department Store and the upper levels of next door’s State Theatre, it’s a colourful treasure trove of period detail, modern art, wacky décor, indulgent luxury and louche sophistication.

The rooms

The designers of the 200 rooms and suites never met a surface they couldn’t decorate, and while showing signs of wear and tear, it’s hard to gripe when surrounded by bowler hat lampshades, coloured glass cabinets containing quirky tchotchkes and a well-stocked minibar that encourages getting the party started. Atmospherically moody lighting and spacious bathrooms (many with large tubs) enhance the hedonistic vibe.

Food & drink

At Gowings, QT Sydney’s acclaimed signature restaurant, you can feast on handmade pasta and meat and fish carved tableside, accompanied by a sterling list of local and international wines. French bistro fare, classic cocktails and top-notch coffee can be had at the beautifully detailed street-level Parlour, also the venue for QT breakfasts.

The service

Exuberant greetings from the Romance Was Born-clad ‘Directors of Chaos’ at the entrance, teamed with a focused, friendly reception team, make for a satisfying experience.

Ideal for: Those pursuing Sydney good times

Why we love it:

  • The Spa. Excellent treatments at SpaQ, including ‘social spa-ing’ for couples and besties.
  • High tea. The creation of celeb chef Adriano Zumbo, available on weekends.
  • The elevator music. Cleverly changes to match the number of people riding.
