They don’t open hotels like The Langham Melbourne any more, with its grand marble lobby and 388 elegant rooms and suites. Expect all the trappings – from retro room service to a rooftop pool with sun lounges and city views – in a stellar location opposite Flinders Street Station. While it might be a little worn around the edges for some, the polished hospitality lives up to its five-star name. It’s a Melbourne classic.
The rooms
Old-school British vibes. Think: patterned carpet, wooden furniture, floral wallpaper, brass lamps, and gilt-framed prints. Solid marble bathrooms have proper taps, fluffy robes, Diptyque toiletries, and many have bathtubs. Sumptuous King beds feature silky cotton sheets and plush pillows (which are even available for sale at the gift shop). Make sure to book a River-facing room to take in those views.
Food & drink
Buffets are a thing here. There’s an impressive spread at Melba restaurant (named after Dame Nellie, naturally). At breakfast, prepare for an avocado toast station, pastries, breads, dumplings, doughnuts, eggs cooked to order, salad, fruits, congee, juice, ice-cream sundaes, chocolate fountains: you name it. Lunch and dinner feature a similar smorgasbord with seafood, curry, roast meats, and desserts for days.
The service
Nothing is too much trouble, from the concierge to the spa. Executive rooms offer access to the Club Lounge on the 23rd floor, with private check-in and various snacks (cheese, sushi) and drinks (local sparkling) available through the afternoon and early evening. It’s a civilised spot to hold a meeting or kick-start your evening.
Ideal for: Old-fashioned luxury in an unrivalled city location
Why we love it:
- The views. Looking at Melbourne’s skyline over the Yarra River is straight from a postcard.
- The vintage charm. From uniformed staff to fresh blooms in the ornate lobby.
- The location. The Langham Melbourne is on the edge of the city and within walking distance of the Arts Centre, NGV, Fed Square and more. Yet it’s still gloriously quiet.
