Brisbane’s credentials as a serious food destination have just received a super boost as Andrew McConnell’s restaurant group Trader House announces it will bring Supernormal to the Queensland capital next year.

The opening will mark the group’s first venture outside of Melbourne, where McConnell has built an empire of award-winning restaurants, including Gimlet, Cumulus Inc., Cutler & Co, Supernormal and more. McConnell’s most recent opening was Gimlet at Cavendish House, which was named Best New Restaurant at the 2022 Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards.

Set to open in late 2023, the Brisbane restaurant will be housed in a new luxury development at 443 Queens Street in the CBD. The property developers, Cbus Property, are the same group behind the original Supernormal site in Melbourne.

“For the past seven years, we’ve welcomed many interstate and international guests to Supernormal in Melbourne. Now, we look forward to contributing to Brisbane’s already growing and vibrant food scene,” says McConnell.

The superstar chef is also excited to work with local Queensland producers to develop new twists on some of his Supernormal classics, which were inspired by his time living and working in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

“There’s a bounty of some of the country’s best produce available. What a thrill to be able to explore this as we refine our offering,” says McConnell.

Design-wise, the restaurant will see Trader House team up with ACME once again, the studio behind some of Australia’s most beautiful restaurants, including Gimlet, Margaret and Mimi’s.

The restaurant is expected to seat around 120 guests and will offer both alfresco and private dining in the heart of Brisbane’s CBD. It will offer all-day dining, including lunch and dinner, seven days.
