Things move slowly on the Galapágos Islands: evolution, tortoises, progress. Which makes the arrival of a new 14-room lodge in the archipelago almost as notable as the discovery of a new species. Opened in September, Pikaia Lodge on Santa Cruz Island promises to be carbon-neutral and very chic indeed, with its own 30-metre yacht for island cruising and on-site creature comforts including a restaurant, bar, pool and spa, and ocean views from every room. The lodge, 15 years in the planning, is located on a former cattle farm, now replanted with endemic flora, and surrounded by a giant-tortoise reserve. Three-night packages including land and sea excursions cost from $4,283 per person, twin share.
