Our restaurant critics’ picks of the latest and best eats around the country right now: Skittle Lane Coffee, Sydney.
The coffee situation around King Street is getting a little out of hand. Even without cheating and including Gumption in the count, this former dead-zone of the CBD now offers a craft-caffeine critical mass that might put even Marrickville on notice: Mecca, the mighty Cross Eatery, Single Origin (and Joe Black X, yes, and Piccolo Me) and now Skittle Lane. This latest addition has sky-high casement windows that almost rival the beauties at The Cross, and the design, by co-owner Jodie Foster (no relation), more than makes the most of its great bones. The lines are lean, but stands of eucalyptus in five-litre Labserv beakers on the crisply cut shelves, and boughs of apple trailing blossom on the blonde timber bleachers bring welcome softness. The menu is minimal and largely Sonoma bread-based (creamed corn and cheddar toasties with pickled onion; Brewtown pastries), while the coffee is en pointe.
Skittle Lane Coffee, 40 King St, Sydney, NSW. Open Mon-Fri 6.30am-4.30pm.
