Canberra’s most alluring hotel features daring design, but never cuts corners on comfort. Opening as Hotel Hotel in 2013, Ovolo Nishi (Japanese for ‘west’) takes the first three floors of an angular New Acton apartment tower centred around a narrow internal chasm lined with Tasmanian ferns. It’s dark, moody and one-of-a-kind.
The rooms
Guests have the choice of Atrium or Sun Rooms according to their natural light requirements, which range in size from Snug to Meandering. The more interesting Atrium rooms are ultra low-lit with brutalist concrete bathrooms, eclectic vintage furniture, huge beds and a well-stocked minibar. Beware: you might lose track of the time in these bunker-like cocoons.
Food & drink
The standalone restaurant, Monster Kitchen, recently pivoted its menu to serve broadly appealing all-day faves. Think burrata, burgers, snacks and sides. Elsewhere, Canberra’s dining scene is on the rise, with hotspots such as Rebel Rebel, Such and Such, and Bar Rochford all nearby.
The service
Reception staff are genuinely friendly and make recommendations on how to get the most out of Canberra. There are bikes to hire, a self-service laundry and flexible check-out times. Room service from Monster arrives quickly; the bacon, egg and cheese milk roll is a morning master stroke.
Ideal for: A creative getaway in the Bush Capital
Why we love it:
- The ultra-modern design. Ovolo Nishi dares to be different, and the risk pays off.
- The location. Being perched on the edge of Lake Burley Griffin means that almost everything is a 10-minute Uber ride away, from Parliament House to Civic.
- The lobby. It’s a buzzy spot to hang out, with its striking wooden plank entryway and eclectic art pieces. There’s also a free drink included for guests at Apero Hour (4.30–5.30pm).
