Most of the city’s best cafés have dispensed with the “speciality coffee” tag and are simply getting on with the business of keeping WA running. In the CBD, make Telegram Coffee (28 Barrack St, Perth, 08 9328 2952) in the State Buildings your first port of call, while the coffee at Stable Hands (8 Bannister St, Fremantle, 0404 216 808) is rock solid.

And the prognosis for coffee drinkers outside of the major centres? Great, at least while serious cafés such as Grouch & Co (1/45 McCoy St, Myaree, 08 9317 1951),Sprolo (138 Canning Hwy, South Perth, 0401 625 134) and the paper cup-free Antz Inya Pantz (732 Albany Hwy, Victoria Park, 08 6102 3148) are in suburbia.

The café scene has also seen plenty of movement food-wise, with Toastface Grillah (Grand La, Perth, 0409 115 909) begetting Lil’ Toastface (179 William St, Northbridge, 0409 115 909) and Mary Street Bakery (272 Railway Pde, West Leederville, 0498 880 012) opening in the CBD (Allendale Square, 77 St Georges Tce, 0497 771 334).
