The anticipation that accompanies truffle season is over. Mike McEnearney kicked things off on June 15 with a dinner at No. 1 Bent Street, using truffles from Jayson Mesman’s Mount Majura property.
Now it’s time to make the most of the fleeting season with one of the many events happening around the country. And if you can’t make it to something below, you’ll have to bring the fun home with one of these truffle dishes.
The annual celebration of Victoria’s truffles, the 2017 event includes a weekend in the Mornington Peninsula where you can experience a private truffle hunt in Red Hill and a five-course degustation at the Flinders Hotel. Don’t miss a weekend of food stalls, produce and classes at Queen Victoria Market or a Sunday lunch at Ombra on July 2. Runs throughout June and July.
Truffle Kerfuffle, Manjimup, WA
Western Australia’s best and brightest culinary talent are taking part in the seventh iteration of this weekend festival, with Vasse Felix‘s Aaron Carr cooking local produce over an open fire and Jesse Blake (Petition Kitchen) showcasing ingredients specially grown, aged and crafted over many months in collaboration with farmers and producers. David Coomer will show you around his own trufferie and there are also plenty of opportunities to try the region’s wines. It’s happening June 23-25.
Truffle Festival, Canberra, ACT
With events throughout the season, Canberra’s festival is a reliable option for anyone who missed the truffle memo. Events include a weekly degustation menu on Mondays at Pulp Kitchen, hunts at four truffle farms in the region including a cooking demonstration after the hunt at Macenmist, and a seminar on the ins and outs of owning a trufferie. The festival runs from June 12 – September 2.
Ormeggio at the Spit is putting on a four-course dinner that honours the classic pairing of truffles and barolo. The robust red is known for its ability to match the equally distinctive flavours of truffle; in this instance it will be paired with black truffles from Western Australia and New South Wales. Happening July 20, with tickets from Ormeggio.
