The ultra-hip Ace Hotel chain started in Seattle and reset the blueprint for contemporary hotels, with buzzy lobbies and urban chic design. The Sydney outpost has cemented itself as the go-to stay for cool creatives, fashion types and city rollers keen to see and be seen. The good news? It also delivers casual comfort, friendly vibes and standalone dining options.
The rooms
Interior designer-of-the-moment David Flack made a splash transforming this former brick factory on the border of Surry Hills and the CBD into a Brooklyn loft-inspired fever dream. Entry level rooms are on the small side, but many Ace guests spend more time out-and-about or in the lobby anyway. The rooms strike a very Millennial mood with signature army blankets on the beds and on-trend extras such as vinyl record players, acoustic guitars, and a sleekly curated mini bar in every room.
Food & drink
It’s rare that an Australian hotel restaurant knocks it out of the park as thoroughly as Kiln, the Ace’s Scandi-influenced rooftop diner led by new head chef Beau Clugston. The lobby restaurant Loam is also a winner, with a sleek contemporary menu (the bacon and egg brunch roll is a triumph) and first-date worthy bar.
The service
The ‘slashie’ staff – many seem to be models/musicians/actors on the side – provide a smiling welcome while the lobby bartenders have a louche look that suggests they’ve seen it all (even though the place only opened in 2022). Despite the cool credentials, it’s mercifully friendly and down to earth, with an ‘if-you-know-you-know’ vibe of a private members club.
Ideal for: Hanging out even if you aren’t staying in-house
Why we love it:
- The lobby. Ace Hotel Sydney is stacked with incredible artwork, couches for lounging and people for spotting.
- Cosy suites. The small but perfectly formed rooms have comfortable beds and flattering lighting.
- The location. Ace is mere moments from Oxford Street and the gritty glam of Surry Hills.
