The storming of the Bastille in Paris was the spark that lit the fuse of the French Revolution, one of the most important events in the history of liberal democracy. So it was a pretty good decision to make that day, the 14th of July, France’s national day. Every year since that day in 1789, France commemorates the storming with all the revelry, panache and fantastic food that you’d expect.

Unlike other important days in the French calendar, Bastille Day doesn’t have classic dishes associated with it – so long as it’s French, it’s fair game. For us here in Australia, Bastille Day recipes mean classic French dishes such as steak frites, cassoulet and boeuf bourgignon, plus French dessert recipes like Crêpes Suzette, mille-feuille and sweet soufflés. And very fortunately for us, these Basitlle Day recipes are extremely winter-friendly.
