Getting to the Maldives just got a whole lot easier thanks to Malaysia Airlines, as the company launches a new route between Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur and Malé, the capital of the Maldives.
Known for its talcum powder-white sand, swaying palm trees and overwater bungalows, the Maldives has long topped many a traveller’s list of dream destinations. But for Australians, getting there has never been easy, with long stopovers and late-night arrivals proving a major deterrent. That is until now.
Launching on Thursday, 1 August, Malaysia Airlines’ new service will let travellers catch an overnight flight out of Sydney, Melbourne or Perth, and land in time to check into their luxury Maldives resort by lunchtime, with just a short layover in Kuala Lumpur.
The route is one of three new services launching in the coming months, including direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Da Nang in Vietnam and Chiang Mai in Thailand.
In addition to the new flights, the airline is also unveiling its new A330neo business class cabin, which will see travellers cosseted in their own individual suites with privacy doors and wireless charging pods, among other amenities.
The airline, which is part of Oneworld Alliance (meaning, yes, you can earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points) already operates multiple flights a day from Australian centres to Kuala Lumpur, where you can now connect with two daily flights to Malé, departing at 10.10am and 12.30pm.
With a flight time of four hours and 20 minutes (plus a three-hour time difference), you’ll find yourself on the ground in paradise by late morning if you catch the first flight of the day.

Malaysia Airlines will launch its daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Malé with its inaugural flight on Thursday 1 August 2024. Introductory fare prices for round-trip flights from Australia to the Maldives start at $869, and are on offer until 31 August 2024.
