Capella’s first Australian property is a knockout, not least because of the impressively smart and sympathetic renovation of the 1912 biscuit-coloured sandstone masterpiece (formerly the Department of Education building) that houses it. The unbeatable combination of magnificent heritage features, state-of-the-art modernity and prime CBD location of Capella Sydney deserves applause.
The rooms
The 192 guest rooms and suites lean into the calming, soothing end of the luxury spectrum via high ceilings, timber floors, neutral colours and a tablet operating system for lights, blinds and climate that is a masterclass in simple functionality. Details like brilliant linen, a solid minibar with a local emphasis, beautiful art and Haeckels products in the luxe bathrooms means no box is left unchecked.
Food & drink
All imbibing options are located on the hotel’s grand ground floor, taking full advantage of the building’s impressive period bone structure. The central skylight-washed Aperture café offers all-day dining including an excellent afternoon tea while Brasserie 1930, run by the Bentley restaurant group, is open for lunch and dinner and includes an excellent buffet breakfast for guests. A cocktail in the McRae Bar is a must.
The service
Crisp, professional and friendly service from a young international team is one of Capella Sydney’s greatest strengths.
