REVIEW
Me Wah is where Hobart goes when it wants a fine night out. A place where diners can wallow in the luxury of noise-silencing carpet and a white linen-clad table, where ladies are given a seat for their handbags and gents the wine list. Yes, we’re in the rarified world of high-end Cantonese food, where tradition has soaked into a menu as long as the Qing dynasty. But there’s more to Me Wah than the vertiginous staff-to-diner ratio, the flourishes of Chinoiserie and the wine list where pricey Old World names rub shoulders with the new. We’re talking luxe produce, expertly handled, whether it’s sea urchin and salted egg yolk dialling king prawns up to 11 or toffee-crackled lozenges of roasted pork belly. Sure, the shopping centre location is a little drab, but Me Wah is a hermetic world unto itself. Tap out before ambitious West-meets-East desserts, which can read more rogue than rapprochement, and keep the illusion intact.
