REVIEW
Meet Petition, a set of three licensed venues within the State Buildings that patrons are free to move between, beverage in hand. While drinkers will want to make camp at the prosaically named Beer Corner and Wine Bar and Merchant, diners are best served at Kitchen, an all-day diner patrolled by upbeat staff that know their stuff. Share-friendly food is the name of the game with choices ranging from light (chopped broccoli with puffed grains, walnuts and sheep’s feta) to the heftier likes of slow-cooked Margaret River beef shin with salsa verde. Dishes photograph as nicely as the room’s elegantly distressed walls and pared-back décor: ocean trout crudo with horseradish cream comes swathed in veil-thin kohlrabi, while desserts are artfully constructed on the plate. The wine list features a winning focus on minimal-intervention winemaking, so whether you’re ordering by the bottle or glass (jacquère, anyone?), interesting drinking is assured.
